Beach weekend
Long Beach State athletics are in full swing this weekend.
The Beach men's golf squad hosts the 49er Collegiate Classic
Thursday and Friday at The Zaharias Course at Pacific Palms
Industry Hills Resort.
Seventeen teams will compete in the event and first round
action begins Thursday at 8 a.m. The teams will play three
rounds -- two rounds Thursday and the final round Friday --
on the par-71 course.
"[The Zaharias Course] is difficult golf course if you've
only played it once," Bob Livingstone, LBSU head coach,
said, "but we have an advantage because our team has
played about five practice rounds there."
In last year's event, LBSU and the University of San Diego
were tied at the end of three rounds, but the 49ers fell on
the fourth playoff hole to finish in second place. Individually,
current 49er Nick Seymour finished tied for fourth place and
former 49er John Mallinger tied for 10th.
USD will defend its title this year and several other prominent
schools such as UCLA and Arizona will take part in the event.
"We've added some strong teams that had to cancel events
earlier this year," Livingstone said.
The 49er cross-country team will take part in the NCAA West
Regionals on Saturday in Tucson, Ari.
Head Coach Andy Sythe will bring his entire men's and women's
squads to the event, which features longer distances -- 10
kilometers as opposed to 8 kilometers for the men; 6K instead
of 5K for the women -- than the regular season.
"The [10K] is geared toward the men and [LBSU's] Aaron
Durham, Brian Stehmeier and Arturo Garcia should all handle
the distance," Sythe said. "I don't think [the extra
kilometer] should affect the women."
Drea Palacio, who earned All-Big West Conference honors this
season, is the 49ers brightest hope at the meet.
"Drea set a goal to crack top 25 [Saturday], but the
top 40 is more realistic," Sythe said. "If she does
finish in the top 25, that would be outstanding. This is the
kind of environment she thrives in.
Sythe is also looking for contributions from Molly Roche'
and Sharon Burnett, and said the improvements in depth created
by Diane Mendoza and Jaclyn Peterson can only help the squad.
"I think these five [including Palacio] have the confidence
to do something as a group," Sythe said.
Men's water polo closes out its regular season with a nonconference
match today at 4 p.m. today against host Loyola Marymount
and a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match against UC
Santa Barbara (7-9, 2-5 MPSF) Sunday at 12 p.m. at the 49er
Campus Pool.
The sixth-ranked 49ers are 10-6 overall, 3-4 in the MPSF,
and will take part in the MPSF Championships Nov. 23-25 in
Berkeley.
LBSU's undefeated and top-ranked women's volleyball team travels
to UC Irvine (3-19, 1-12 BWC) for a Big West match Saturday
at 7 p.m. The Beach (20-0, 13-0) swept the Anteaters
at home Oct. 13.
Men's basketball plays its second and final exhibition game
of the season against Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at
7:30 p.m. at The Pyramid. The Beach lost in overtime to the
LA All Stars, 112-108, Nov. 1.
