Crew competes
at Balboa
By Kristina Klein
Special to the Forty-Niner
The Long Beach
State men's and women's club crew teams participated in the
annual Newport Autumn Regatta last weekend, an event which
including teams from UCLA, Cal, USC, UC Irvine, UC Davis,
Stanford and Orange Coast College.
The men's varsity
team used this regatta more as a practice meet and experimented
with different line up combinations. The finishing time of
16:34 around the Balboa Island's 5 kilometer course disappointed
the 49ers, but gave them a new goal to shoot for in the spring
season.
"We are a
very strong team with a lot of talent, but today we just didn't
click," said Tommy Harnett, co-captain of the men's varsity
squad. "Our focus has always been the spring season and
now we know what we must work on to get where we want to be
come March."
The women's varsity
team raced both its 8-man and 4-man boats and treated the
regatta as a way to gage their performance with the surrounding
schools.
The team placed
14th out of 20 teams and expect better results in the team's
spring races.
"We are really
excited about our novice girls that will be racing this spring,"
said Karri Miller, captain of the women's varsity team, "and
we know what improvements varsity needs to make by spring
as well."
The crew teams
will be racing in the Long Beach Marina on Dec. 8 in their
annual Christmas Regatta.
