Beach routs Cal
behind Farr
By Kandace Hsu
Special to the Forty-Niner
The Long Beach
State club ice hockey team fought back to beat Cal, 8-3, Saturday
at Lakewood Glacial Gardens.
The fatigued Bears
played hard, but were no match for the 49ers -- ranked ninth
in the American Collegiate Hockey Association -- after playing
their third game in a row on a three-day road trip.
Jason Katzen put
Cal (2-6) on the board first with a goal in the opening period,
but LBSU's Dominic Catazarite tied the game with a minute
left in the first period.
Adam Heckatorn
scored a power-play goal in the second period that gave the
Beach a 2-1 lead. The 49ers (5-4) then extended the advantage
on a goal from Drew Farr and a breakaway goal from Schon Garcia
to close out the period.
Farr scored his
second goal of the game in the third period and goals from
Ryan Scott and Matt Cooper sealed the Bears' fate.
"We had a
slow first period," Farr said. "But we picked things
up in the second period by limiting their shots and getting
where we needed to be."
The Beach's next
game is Nov. 17 against UC San Diego at Lakewood Glacial Gardens.
Game time is set for 9:15 p.m.
In other Long
Beach State club sports:
Rugby still unbeaten -- The Long Beach State rugby
squad extended its season-opening winning streak to four games
with a 20-7 victory over visiting USC Sunday.
The Beach dominated
much of the offensive play during the match but were hampered
by penalties. Poor execution, including four misplayed goal
attempts, also thwarted the 49er attack.
Cesar Santoyo,
Dustin Snow and Harold Hoffman scored for LBSU. Snow and Hoffman
have scored in all four LBSU contests this season.
Men's soccer
loses -- The Beach men's soccer team closed out the regular
season with a 3-0 nonleague loss to Utah State in Las Vegas
Saturday.
LBSU (11-2-1) will
conclude the season at the Association of Collegiate Club
Soccer National Championships in Cocoa, Fla. Nov. 17-19.
The 49ers, who
finished second in California League play after dropping a
3-0 decision to first-place UC Santa Barbara Oct. 27, are
led by Tristan Corbett, who finished the season with 10 goals
and eight assists, and Dan Kolano, who tallied nine goals
and seven assists.
