Carlson's four pace Beach

By Kandace Hsu
Special to the Forty-Niner

Things came together for the Long Beach State club ice hockey team in a 10-3 victory over Eastern Washington Sunday at Lakewood Glacial Gardens.

The victory came just in time -- with the loss of key players to injuries throughout their first six games, the 49ers needed to find a way to win.

"We got off on a slow start, but hope to turn things around tonight," LBSU captain Dominic Catazarite said before the game. "We're going to come out with a lot of heart and intensity and make tonight the start of our new season."

Matt Cooper opened first period with a goal that gave the 49ers a 1-0 lead. LBSU (3-4) dominated the second period with excellent goaltending by Ryan Falconer and a goal by Ryan Scott and two goals a piece from Catazarite and Greg Carlson that gave The Beach a 6-0 lead.

Catazarite and Carlson added a goal each in the third period to record hat tricks and Scott Yeske added a score to give the 49ers a 9-0 advantage. Eastern Washington's Jacob Bockser and Steve Ritter each scored later in the period to make it 9-2, but Carlson answered back with his fourth goal of the night for LBSU's final goal of the night.

"We had a good game tonight," LBSU Head Coach John Cacciatore said. "A lot of players stepped up, but we still have a lot of work to do."

The team's next action is Saturday against Cal at Lakewood Glacial Gardens. Game time is set for 9:15 p.m.
