49ers go long,
come up short in 2-2 tie
By Phil Witte
On-line Forty-Niner
Battered and bruised,
the injury ravaged Long Beach State women's soccer team held
defending Big West Conference champion Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
to a 2-2 draw Friday at George Allen Field.
The tie all but eliminated the 49ers (4-8-2 overall, 3-2-1
BWC) from a chance at the conference title and was the first
time in the three years The Beach was unable to defeat defending
conference champ Cal Poly (5-7-4, 2-1-2 BWC).
"This was a hard fought, physical game," said 49er
sweeper Shanna Wender.
LBSU got on the board in the 22nd minute when Amber Glende
passed to Alison Wiegand, who had her back to the goal at
the edge of the penalty box. She spun around a Mustang defender
and shot the ball into the lower right corner of the goal.
The goal was Wiegand's team-leading fifth of the season.
The Mustangs equalized the score before the break when Janelle
Loudat headed a Megan Schlegel cross to Erica Clauseen, who
shot it past Jihan Elgazzar from only six yards out.
The second half was a repeat of the first, with both sides
battling tenaciously for every loose ball and neither side
holding any real advantage.
In the 68th minute, Cal Poly took the lead when Elgazzar made
a diving save on a Carolyn Schifftner shot, but Schlegel grabbed
the rebound and blasted the ball past the fallen goalie from
eight yards out.
With the Cal Poly midfield blocking all attacks, the 49ers
switched to the long ball, which led to the tying goal. Deanna
Bender blasted a ball the went over both the 49er front line
and the Mustang defense, but found a streaking Kim Stempkowski,
whose sliding shot eluded Mustang keeper Greta Shirdon into
the goal.
"Abie [Curry] could have run it down, but she let me
get and I just managed to reach it and shoot," Stempkowski
said.
The Beach failed to capitalize on golden opportunities the
remainder of regulation and overtime. Three times a 49er was
open and on goal and put shots either off-target or right
at Shirdon.
"We didn't put balls away in front of their goal,"
49er Head Coach Peter Reynaud said. "We have a young
front line and all we need is some more experience."
For the game, the 49ers outshot the visitors, 20-16. Shirdon
finished the game with nine saves, while Elgazzar had five.
