Long Beach surfers unite for good cause

By Tom Carey
On-line Forty-Niner

Students, alumni and surf team members hit the waves Sunday at the annual Long Beach State Campuswide Surf Contest in Huntington Beach.

Surfers of all skill levels showed up to show their support and help raise money for the American Red Cross. The contest set the way for more events in the future.

"One hundred percent of our proceeds are being donated today," said Joe Quilico, a senior communication major and vice president of the Surf Club. We hope to get more people involved next year."

According to Rita Hayes, director of club sports at LBSU, the contest was also a way to draw more students out of physical education classes and away from the more traditional sports.

"We are going to try to put this contest on each semester to get a different group of students involved, not just your average sports player," Hayes said.

The final heat of the day looked more like the final of a professional contest with four standout surfers fighting for bragging rites and free gift certificates.

The competitors were pulling out all the stops throughout the final as each surfer tried to outscore his opponent's wave with aerials, reverse 360s and powerful snaps.

"The competition in the final was tough," said Mike Reilley, the Surf Club president who finished third overall "I was really happy with third place."

In the end, it was Surf Club Coach Chad Wells who schooled his own team and friends to take home first place and gift certificates to Jamba Juice. Wells was pleased with the contest and hopes to compete again.

"The cause was great," Wells said, "and I can't wait to do it again."
Final Results of the first annual Long Beach State Campuswide Surf Contest -- 1st place: Chad Wells (Surf Club coach);  2nd place: Ben Will (alumni); 3rd place: Mike Reilley (Surf Club president); 4th place: Ryan Johnson (Surf Club treasurer).
