Another hard luck loss for water polo

By Ben Dimapindan
On-line Forty-Niner

No team in the country is better than the Long Beach State men's water polo team at giving top-ranked squads a big scare by nearly pulling off an upset.

Saturday's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest against third-ranked Pepperdine was no exception as No. 6 LBSU (6-6, 1-4 MPSF) took the host Waves (10-2, 3-1 MPSF) to the limit before falling short in a 15-12 overtime loss.

"We're 6-6 and could easily be 10-2 right now," Head Coach Rick Azevedo said. "We're lacking one minute of execution when the game is on the line. We're playing well with the best teams in the nation and this is our fourth overtime loss. For me, it's a bit frustrating, because we're doing the right things -- scoring, making plays on offense and defense -- but it just comes down to a question of executing [for a full 28 minutes]."

In the first quarter, the Waves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, then the fans at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool were treated to an exchange of prolific scoring from both teams.

The back-and-forth scoring showcased nine ties and five lead changes.

Leading the way for The Beach were senior two-meter man Chris Segesman, who fired in four goals, and senior driver Justin Jewell, who added three goals.

For Pepperdine, freshman utilityman Jesse Smith led all scorers with six goals, while junior Scott Harvey tallied three goals.

At the end of regulation, the score was deadlocked at 11-11 after both squads erupted with five goals each in the fourth quarter.

In the first overtime period, the 49ers were outscored 3-1, as timely goals from Karl Niehaus and Harvey put the Waves ahead for good.

LBSU failed to score in the second overtime period and Pepperdine recorded another goal to secure the 15-12 victory over The Beach.

Beach men's water polo action continues this Friday as the 49ers visit UC Santa Cruz for a nonconference match at 2 p.m.
