Beach breaks streak with 4-0 Big West victory

Staff reports

Sophomore Abie Curry scored two goals and senior Kim Stempkowski had a goal and an assist as the Long Beach State women's soccer team ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over host UC Riverside in a Big West Conference contest Sunday.

The victory lifts the 49ers' conference record to 3-2 (4-8-1 overall) and keeps The Beach in contention for the Big West title with four games to play. Cal State Fullerton leads the Big West with a 5-1 record.

Curry opened the scoring against UC Riverside (4-8, 1-5 BWC) with a rebound goal off a Stempkowski shot in the 12th minute, and the Beach took a 2-0 lead when redshirt freshman Allison Wiegand scored an unassisted goal in the 17th minute.

LBSU took the lead into halftime and blew the game open when Curry scored unassisted in the 67th minute to make it 3-0.

Stempkowski closed out the scoring in the 81st minute, connecting on a shot from 40-yards out for her first goal of the season.

Curry now has three goals on the season, while Wiegand is tied for the team lead in goals with fellow freshman Kristin Travis at four.

The Beach outshot UC Riverside, 21-7, and 49er keepers Jihan Elgazzar and Hannah Cochrun, who each played a half, made two saves each.

LBSU begins its final homestand of the year with two Big West matchups this weekend, taking on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (5-7-3, 2-1-1 BWC) Friday at 3 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara (7-6-1, 3-1 BWC) Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at George Allen Field.
