Road awaits 49er athletes

Staff reports

Three Long Beach State athletic squads hit the road in earnest this weekend as the 49ers' women's soccer and volleyball teams, along with the men's water polo team, have road games this weekend.

The 49er women's soccer will try to rebound from its first Big West Conference loss with games against conference rivals Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside. The Beach takes on the conference-leading Titans (8-5, 3-1 BWC) at 5 p.m. Friday at Cal State Fullerton and travel to Riverside to play the Highlanders (4-6, 1-3 BWC) Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Beach's record stands at 3-7-1 overall, 2-1 in conference.

Women's volleyball also has two Big West matchups this weekend, both on the road. The Beach, the top-ranked team in the nation at 13-0 and 7-0 in conference, play Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (11-5, 5-4 BWC) Friday at 7 p.m. and travel down Interstate 101 to tangle with UC Santa Barbara Saturday, also at 7 p.m., in what could be a battle for first place in the Big West.

UC Santa Barbara, ranked 23rd in the nation, is 9-7 overall and 7-1 in the conference. If the Gauchos beat last-place UC Irvine Friday and the 49ers defeated Cal Poly, the teams' Saturday match will have major conference implications.

LBSU handed UC Santa Barbara its only Big West loss on the season, beating the Gauchos in five games at The Pyramid in September.

Men's water polo has the team's only home game this weekend, sandwiched between two road games. The 49ers begin the weekend with a nonconference game against UC San Diego Friday at 4 p.m. in San Diego.

The Beach follows that with two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches to close out the weekend. LBSU (5-4, 1-2 MPSF) takes on conference-leading Stanford (10-0, 3-0 MPSF) Saturday at 12 p.m. at the 49er Campus Pool and head to Malibu to play Pepperdine (8-2, 1-1 MPSF) Sunday at 12 p.m.
