Twelve players score as Beach cruises to win

By Ben Dimapindan
On-line Forty-Niner

Long Beach State senior two-meter man Chris Segesman said that his team was really exhausted after the two-day NorCal tournament last weekend, but there was certainly no trace of fatigue in the 49ers Monday during their 19-5 rout over visiting Chaminade University.

Instead, Segesman and the rest of the LBSU men's water polo team played like Energizer bunnies, using blazing team speed to suffocate the Chaminade offensive attack and set up easy goals for 12 different scorers in the nonconference victory at the 49er Campus Pool.

With the victory, The Beach raised its record to 5-4, while Chaminade fell to 6-6.

"Coming in from the NorCal tournament, we were pretty sharp and we were able to execute good plays offensively and defensively," LBSU Head Coach Azevedo said. "A lot of our guys scored and a lot of guys played -- that was the key [to winning] today."

The Beach opened the game with Segesman, who hammered in a pair of goals and had one steal early in the first quarter, leading the charge.

In the second quarter, the 49ers blew the game open with a three-goal surge to gain an 8-2 edge over Chaminade.

Sophomore driver David Del Grande scored two of his team-high three goals in the second. His second goal was assisted by redshirt freshman goalie Michael Konstas, who aired out a pass the length of the pool that landed right in front of the streaking Del Grande for an easy score.

"Our game plan was to really come out strong," Segesman said. "We were really exhausted from the tournament this weekend, so we came to play a solid first half with the starters and then get our back half plenty of playing time today."

The Beach emptied its bench in the second half, and the 49er reserves continued the domination that the starting unit began, scoring five goals in the third quarter and posting a six-goal explosion in the fourth.

The 49ers scored all six fourth-quarter goals within a span of less than three minutes.

Konstas finished the contest with 14 saves for the 49ers, who next play at UC San Diego Friday in a nonconference game.
