Beach loses heartbreaker
Staff reports
For Long Beach
State women's soccer, the undefeated run lasted exactly two
games.
Host UC Irvine
beat the 49ers, 2-1, in a Big West Conference game Sunday,
handing LBSU its first conference loss after two consecutive
victories to open the Big West schedule.
Following a scoreless
first half, The Beach (3-7-1, 2-1 BWC) tallied the game's
first score in the 58th minute on an Abie Curry goal off an
assist from Deanna Bender.
But UC Irvine tied
the game just over a minute later on a goal Caroline Kabe
and Mary Peters scored the game-winner with only 26 seconds
left in the game.
UC Irvine's victory,
coupled with Cal State Fullerton's 1-0 loss Sunday to Utah
State, leaves the Anteaters (5-4-1, 2-0-1 BWC) as the Big
West only undefeated team. Cal State Fullerton still leads
the conference with a 3-1 record (9 points).
UC Irvine is tied
for second with Cal State Northridge at seven points and LBSU
is tied for fourth with Pacific and Utah State at six points
apiece.
The Beach travels
to Cal State Fullerton for its next contest, taking on the
conference-leading Titans Friday at 5 p.m. before heading
to CSUN Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup.
