Beach splits at Stanford

By Ben Dimapindan
On-line Forty-Niner

The first day of action at the NorCal Tournament, held Saturday at Stanford University, mirrored the success ? and lack thereof ? that has followed the Long Beach State men's water polo team this season.

The sixth-ranked 49ers (3-3) defeated Pacific, 13-6, but fell short against second-ranked UCLA, 10-8, on the first day of the tournament, repeating their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation results against the two teams earlier this season.

In its first game Saturday, LBSU relied on a full-scale offensive attack to overwhelm the defense of No. 11 Pacific.

Seven different 49ers fired the ball into the net, including three apiece from senior defenseman Aaron Holloway and senior driver Scott Miller. Miller led all LBSU scorers on the day with a total of five goals.

Also, with four-goal outbursts for LBSU in the second and third quarters plus six saves from senior goalie Brett Adolph, The Beach forged an easy road to the 13-6 rout of the Tigers (2-7).

In Saturday's second game, the 49ers were neck-and-neck with two-time defending NCAA champion UCLA throughout most of the match, until the Bruins (7-1) staved off an upset with clutch goals late in the game.

The Beach matched the Bruins goal for goal throughout the first three quarters behind Miller's two scores and two more coming from senior two-meter man Chris Segesman.

However, UCLA outscored LBSU 3-2 late in the game to seal the10-8 victory.

"We beat Pacific and lost to UCLA, [so] we're looking to finish in fifth place [Sunday]," LBSU Head Coach Rick Azevedo said.

In addition, Segesman, who scored a total of four goals Saturday, inched closer to becoming the seventh all-time leading scorer at LBSU. Segesman was at 136 goals as of Saturday, while former 49er Scott Weir, who is seventh on the all-time list, had 142 in his career.

The results of Sunday's games from the NorCal Tournament will be in Tuesday's On-line Forty-Niner
