Another OT loss for Long Beach

By Phil Witte
On-line Forty-Niner

Lauren Doffing's first collegiate goal was canceled out by an overtime goal by University of San Diego's Casey Loveland as the visitors knocked off the 49ers 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at George Allen Field.

The loss dropped the 49ers record to 3-6-1, 2-0 in the Big West Conference and the Toreros record improved to 8-3 on the season. The 49ers record on overtime games dropped to 0-3-1 on the year.

"We had our chances late in the game, but we lost to a very good team today," Head Coach Peter Reynaud said.

USD controlled play in a physical first half, but were unable to connect until very late.

With only 17 seconds remaining, Gina Polti collected a Claire Currie pass at the edge of the penalty box and knocked a half-volley into the right corner past a flat-footed Jihan Elgazzar.

Things almost got worse for The Beach at the beginning of the second half, but two point-blank Torero shots were saved on the goal line. Sarah Gamet cleared a Becca Smith shot and Diana Sanguinetti cleared a Heather Spence shot in the first 10 minutes of the half.

LBSU evened the score in the 59th minutes on Doffing's goal, which came on a back-post header from a Deanna Bender corner kick.

"I was all by myself at the back post and I got full contact on the ball," Doffing said.

Both teams traded attacks as the game got increasingly physical, culminating with a yellow card for USD's Val Stracco for tackling Bender from behind.

Kelly Kaufman missed a golden opportunity to win the game in regulation when a cross from Kristin Travis found her wide open in front of goal but her header went high and wide.

The momentum the 49ers gained in the second half disappeared in overtime as the Toreros reasserted control of play.

Ten minutes into overtime, Stephanie Barnier sent in a cross that Sarah Gamet cleared, but only as far as Loveland, who headed the ball into an empty net.

For the game, the Toreros outshot the 49ers 20-9. Elgazzar finished with three saves for The Beach, and Leila Duren logged two for USD.

Next up for the 49ers is a return to Big West play this Friday at 1 p.m. at UC Irvine.
