Beach weekend

Staff reports

Here's the lowdown of Long Beach State athletics this weekend:

Cross-country: The 49er men's and women's teams travel to San Luis Obispo to take part in the Cal Poly Invitational Saturday. The men's team is in good shape, as five runners set personal-best times last Saturday at the Long Beach Invitational.

On the women's side, sophomore Drea Palacio continues her strong season for LBSU after finishing sixth overall at the Long Beach Invite with a time of 18:41.8, 30 seconds better then her previous-best time.

Women's volleyball: The nation's top-ranked team rolled to another Big West Conference home victory Tuesday against Cal State Fullerton and match up against conference foe UC Irvine Saturday at The Pyramid. Brittany Hochevar recorded eight aces in the Cal State Fullerton match, the second most ever by a LBSU player.

Men's water polo: The 49ers, which evened their record at 2-2 with a 13-6 nonconference victory over Cal Baptist last Saturday, head to Stanford to play in the NorCal Tournament Saturday and Sunday.

Fifteen teams will compete in the tournament, including all nine Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams. LBSU will tangle with MPSF-rival Pacific, which the 49ers defeated, 13-6, earlier this season, in the first round and take on either UCLA or Air Force in the second round.

Scott Miller scored a career-high three goals against Cal Baptist and now shares the team lead in goals with Nathan Allard at six.

Women's soccer: LBSU will return to Big West Conference play Sunday against host UC Irvine at 1 p.m. The 49ers (3-6-1, 2-0 in the Big West) fell to University of San Diego, 2-1, in overtime Wednesday.

Freshman Kristin Travis leads the Beach with four goals on the season, while fellow freshman Allison Wiegand has three.

Women's tennis: LBSU's players will participate in the Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiates beginning Friday and continuing through Sunday.

The 49ers are led by sophomore Anastasia Dvornikova, who reached the semifinals of the Wathen-Hancock Bulldog Classic Sept. 30 and competed Tuesday in the Riviera Women's All-American Tournament at UCLA, losing in the second round.
