So, the Long Beach State women's soccer team started this
season with only one victory in its first seven games?
Fuhgetaboutit.
LBSU started their season anew Friday at George Allen Field,
beating Utah State, 3-1, in the Big West Conference opener
for both teams.
Freshmen forwards Alison Wiegand and Kristin Travis had a
goal and an assist apeice and junior defender Becky Ricci
added her first collegiate goal for the 49ers, who won the
first Big West opener in the program's history.
"We're off to a good start," Peter Reynaud, LBSU's
first-year head coach, said. "We had a good overall performance
and didn't allow that much penetration."
Weigand got the 49ers on the board just over two minutes into
the game, taking a perfect cross pass from Travis and heading
the ball past Utah State keeper Tracy Brady for an early 1-0
Beach lead.
"It was a great setup," Weigand said of Travis'
pass. "There was no way I could screw it up."
49er defender Sarah Gamet also got an assist on Travis' goal.
Utah State (3-5-1, 0-1 BWC) came back to tie the score, 1-1,
in the 14th minute when the Aggies' Jessica Ebner scored off
a feed from Amber Tracy.
But LBSU took the lead for good in the 36th minute. Beach
midfielder Stefanie Casares sent a cross pass into the Utah
State goal box that Brady moved out to block.
The ball careened off Brady and landed right on the foot of
Travis, who put the ball behind Brady for a 2-1 lead the 49er
carried into halftime.
"Our second goal was lucky," Reynaud said. "We
just haven't gotten those kind of goals this year."
Ricci put the game away in the 65th minute, taking a pass
from forward Abie Curry and scoring to make it 3-1. Curry
had beaten a Utah State defender to a ball just in front of
the Aggies' goal box when Brady came out to challenge. Brady
fell, and Curry found a wide-open Ricci, who put the ball
into the empty net.
Beach keeper Jihan Elgazzar made five saves and the 49ers
outshot the Aggies, 16-14.
Travis now has a team-leading four goals on the season. Wiegand's
goal was her second on the year.
