No. 1 Beach sweeps again

By Marten Lewerth
On-line Forty-Niner

If things keep going like this, 49er mascot Prospector Pete might lose his job to a broom.

The first-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team tallied sweeps No. 7 and 8 on the season this weekend with routs over Big West Conference rivals Pacific and Cal State Northridge away from The Pyramid.

Before Thursday's match against Pacific at Stockton, the 49ers (11-0, 5-0 BWC) had not won a contest against the 12th-ranked Tigers since November of 1998. Pacific (13-3, 4-1 BWC) also boasted an impressive 17-match conference win streak coming into the evening.

Enter the 49ers and two-time All-American Cheryl Weaver, who led all players with 17 kills and a .452 hitting percentage as The Beach swept Pacific 30-28, 30-15, 30-18, before 2,005 at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Tayyiba Haneef tallied 11 kills and nine digs and setter Keri Nishimoto had 33 assists as the 49ers outhit (.327 to .115) and outblocked (6.5 to 3.0) Pacific to claim sole possession of top spot in the conference. The teams had been tied for first in the Big West.

Jennifer Joines led Pacific, which committed 28 hitting errors, with 14 kills.

On Saturday the 49er guns came out blazing against first-year conference foe Cal State Northridge (9-5, 3-3 BWC) at the Matadome. Long Beach hit .704 in the first set and finished with a mark of .458 en route to a 30-12, 30-17, 30-20 decision.

Weaver again finished first in kills, notching 16 on a .652 attack percentage and Haneef walked off the court with a double-double, tallying 13 kills and 11 digs. Nishimoto dished out 43 assists and 11 digs while Elisha Thomas and Brittany Hochevar both had nine kills and finished hitting above .600.

Laura Walter and Erica Aere each had nine kills for the Matadors.

Next up for the No. 1 49ers is a conference match against Cal State Fullerton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Pyramid.
