For Beach, it's fun at No. 1

Staff reports

A victory over top-ranked Nebraska to open the season, a grueling five-game win over No. 18 UC Santa Barbara two weeks ago and lastly a four-set triumph over No. 4 Stanford Friday.

For the Long Beach State women's volleyball team, these results have added up to one thing: an undisputed No. 1 ranking in the nation.

The 49ers (9-0 overall, 3-0 in the Big West Conference) are ranked No. 1 in the AVCA/USA Today/Coaches poll released earlier this week. Couple this with The Beach's No. 1 ranking in Volleyball Magazine -- which has had LBSU ranked No. 1 for the first month of the season -- and the 49ers now hold the elite status of being the top-ranked team in both major polls.

This is the first time since 1998 the 49ers have been ranked No. 1 in both polls. 1998 was also the year LBSU went 36-0 and claimed the national championship.

The Beach will take its lofty ranking on the road this weekend with Big West matches against No. 12 Pacific Thursday in Stockton and Cal State Northridge Saturday in Northridge.
