LBSU finds success
in Fresno
Staff reports
Several Long Beach
State women's tennis players started their seasons off right
at the Wathen-Hancock Bulldog Classic in Fresno over the weekend,
but no 49er was able to come home with the top prize.
Beach sophomore Anastasia Dvornikova came close, reaching
the semifinals in singles and teaming with fellow 49er sophomore
Lindsey Marvel to reach the doubles finals before falling
in each.
Dvornikova, who was seeded fourth in singles, lost to top-seeded
Raquel Kops-Jones of California, 6-3, 6-2, in the semis Sunday
morning. Kops-Jones went on to win the tournament.
Dvornikova and Marvel were thwarted in their effort to win
the doubles title after losing to top-seeded Christina Fasano
and Nicole Havlicek of Cal, 8-3.
Dvornikova and Marvel beat Vania Apodaca and Kodee Domingo
of Nevada, 8-6 to reach the finals.
Three Beach singles players reached the round of 16 at the
tournament -- besides Anastasia Dvornikova, her sister, sophomore
Alena Dvornikova and Marvel each advanced past the third round.
Alena Dvornikova fell in the round of 16 to Chantel Wiggins
of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-2, and Marvel was knocked out in the
quarterfinals by Fasano, 6-3, 6-2, after defeating Petra Abraham
of Sacramento State, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16.
LBSU will next play Oct. 12-14 at the Cal State Fullerton
Fall Intercollegiate Tournament.
