Beach athletes run at Stanford

By Alisha Gomez
On-line Forty-Niner

The Long Beach State's women's cross country team placed 19th out of 25 teams and the men's team placed 13th out of 27 teams at the Stanford Invitational Saturday.

"Last year, the women's team placed 17th out of 21 teams," Andy Sythe said, director of cross country and track. "We're still pretty close to the way we performed last year."

Sythe said that this year's Stanford Invitational was different for the women because there were significant changes like the course added on another 1,000 meters, making it 3.75 miles instead of 3.1 miles.

For the men's team, this year was better than the last, according to Sythe.

"We took 15th place out of 18 teams last year," Sythe said, "so I think that taking 13th out of 27 teams this year definitely shows a lot of improvement."

Sythe said the weather was about 90 degrees for the invitational and he was impressed with all the runners because they ran decent times under such conditions.

The Beach's top women's finisher was sophomore Drea Palacio, who ran the course in 23:16, placing 70th overall. Following her was sophomore teammates Molly Roche' with 23:45, coming in 94th overall, and Sharon Burnett, who came in 23:52, placing 100th in the invitational.

For the men, sophomore Brian Stehmeier was the first LBSU runner to finish with a time of 26:37, placing 49th overall.
Last year Stehmeier placed 103rd with a time of 28:05. His time at the Stanford Invitational was his lifetime best by 11 seconds, according to Sythe.
Arturo Garcia, a freshman, was the second placer for the Beach with a time of 26:41 and finished in 55th place overall. Teammate Aaron Durham finished the course in 27:23 and placed 85th overall.

LBSU's Brian Robles did not run at the invitational due to problems with his knee. Sythe said that Robles waited up until race warm-ups Saturday to see if he would run, but he was still in too much pain and not ready to race.
