Home
not kind to 49ers

Home-pool advantage
was spoiled for the Long Beach State men’s water polo team
Friday as visiting UCLA erupted with a four-goal third quarter
surge to ensure an 8-6 MPSF victory at the 49er Campus Pool.
Despite strong goaltending from LBSU redshirt freshman Michael
Konstas, who tallied 10 saves in his first collegiate start,
the Bruins’ ball movement and patience on offense opened the
door of opportunity for close range scores.
"It’s the second game of the season and we still need
to fix some things, like problems on defense, but we’ll work
everything out," Konstas said. "UCLA and [LBSU]
are on an equal level and [any mistakes could cost the game]."
The score was tied, 4-4, at halftime, but UCLA pulled away
in the third quarter by outscoring The Beach, 4-1, to take
an 8-5 lead.
UCLA goalie Brandon Brooks shut down LBSU from that point,
denying the 49ers any legitimate scoring chances.
The only LBSU player to find success was senior driver Scott
Miller, whose goal with less than three minutes remaining
narrowed the UCLA lead to 8-6.
Miller and senior driver Justin Jewell scored two goals each
for the 49ers, who fell to 0-2 in the MPSF. UCLA is 2-0.
"When it came down to front-court offense and front-court
defense, we outplayed them," LBSU Head Coach Rick Azevedo
said. "We had more ejections and more scoring situations,
but it was a matter of executing on the opportunities. We
didn’t play bad at all; I thought we rushed a little bit and
had a couple of bad bounces."
