Special to the Forty-Niner
For years, Long
Beach State students have participated in club sports and
Friday representatives from each club gathered in the Ukleja
Room at The Pyramid to plan out this season's events.
There are 20 different
club sports offered at LBSU, giving each student an opportunity
to expand their athletic ability.
For instance, the
LBSU ski and snowboard team provides students with a club
the offers recreation and competition. Last year, the team's
Jeff Chuh took fourth place in the Vans Triple Crown Event.
Snowboarders are able to show their skills as they compete
against schools like USC, UCLA and the University of San Diego.
A more recognized
club sport on campus is the men and women's crew teams, which
have won numerous titles. The 2001 Men's Varsity Lightweight
Four competed in Philadelphia's Dad Vail Regatta and came
home with the bronze medal.
The LBSU surf team
started competition again last year after 10 years away from
the sport, and the club proved it was a winner immediately,
finished first in the National Scholastic Surfing competition
held at Dana Point this summer.
Contributing to
the victory were club co-founders Mike Reilly and Benjamin
Will. Reilly finished third and Will fourth in the individual
competition.
Seventy members
strong, the surf team will again challenge schools such as
UC Santa Barbara, USC and UCLA this season.
If one is interested
in competing in club sports, contact Club Sports Director
Rita Hayes at 985-7351 or visit the club sports office in
PE 13 for a complete list of each club and its contacts.
