49ers second at SoCal tournament

By Mike Haubrich
On-line Forty-Niner

A second-place finish in a golf tournament would please most teams, but not the Long Beach State women's squad.

"All in all, we played pretty good," LBSU Head Coach Sue Ewart said of the 49ers' finish at the Southern California Intercollegiate Tournament. "Some of our players thought they could play better, but golfers always think that way."

Pepperdine won the tournament, held at the PGASC Golf Course in Calimesa. The Waves had a team total of 591, 25 strokes better than the second-place 49ers, who finished at 616.

Pepperdine, one of the nation's top teams, entered the Southern California Intercollegiate Tournament after its season-opening tournament in New Mexico was canceled.

"[Pepperdine] added a strong component to the competition," Ewart said. "It's a great experience for our team to compete against players of that caliber."

The University of San Francisco finished third at 622.

"San Francisco put the pressure on us," Ewart said. "They were in the top-50 [in the nation] last year, so that shows us were just as strong, if not better, than San Francisco."

Heeyoung Cho was The Beach's top individual finisher, carding 75s both Monday and Tuesday to finish in a tie for 4th overall with USF's Susannah Laing at 150.

LBSU's Carla Legaspi shot 80-75 and finished in a tie for 10th at 155.

Katherine Hull of Pepperdine shot a five-under 67 Tuesday and a 72 Monday to earn medalist honors with an overall score of 139.

The Beach next plays at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Ore. Oct. 8-9.

"We have a couple of weeks to work on our short game," Ewart said, "and then we'll roll on."
