49er events postponed

In light of the
terrorist attacks on the United States Tuesday, Long Beach
State announced the postponements of several athletic events
stretching into this weekend.
Three women's volleyball
matches, two women's soccer games, several men's water polo
games and a cross country meet were cancelled.
The men's and women's
golf teams were able to finish their respective tournaments
Tuesday.
The Big West Conference,
in a teleconference with athletic administrators from member
universities, decided to cancel conference games and nonconference
home games involving the schools. The decision involved all
sports.
The conference
plans to resume a regular schedule of sports action beginning
Monday and will reschedule postponed events at a later date.
The LBSU women's
volleyball team was scheduled to open Big West play at home
Thursday against Idaho and Friday against Utah State. Both
matches, along with a highly anticipated home match against
Penn State Saturday, were cancelled.
The Idaho and Utah
State matches will be rescheduled, but the Penn State match
probably will not, according to Sports Information Director
Steve Janisch.
The 49er women's
soccer team has already rescheduled its game against the University
of San Diego. The game, originally scheduled for Sunday, will
now be played Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. at George Allen
Field.
The cross country
team will probably run in the UC Riverside Invitational Saturday,
Sept. 22 after Saturday's Aztec Invitational, which the 49ers
were to take part in, was cancelled.
The 49er men's
water polo team home game against the University of Massachusetts
and this weekend's So-Cal Tournament at USC were also cancelled
and will not be rescheduled.
Men's and women's
golf teams were able to finish tournaments Tuesday ? the men
finished fourth at the Northwest Collegiate Classic in Corvallis,
Ore. and the women finished ninth at the Ptarmigan Fall Classic
in Ft. Collins, Colo.
Since all airports
were closed, the problem for both teams was getting back to
Long Beach after the tournaments ended.
"We were lucky,"
said Bob Livingstone, 49er men's golf coach. "We were
able to rent some cars and get back. Some of the other school
had to go [north] to Portland to rent their cars."
Livingstone said
the team left Oregon right after the tournament Tuesday, drove
seven hours to Sacramento, where the team found a hotel. The
team finished the final leg, and arrived on campus late Wednesday.
The women's golf
team left Colorado at 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to Livingstone.
The team had still not arrived as of press time.
