The women's volleyball
team capped its trip to Las Vegas Sunday with a 30-16, 30-16,
30-14 sweep over American at the Gameworks/UNLV Invitational.
Outside hitter
Tayyiba Haneef tallied 20 kills on a .679 attack percentage
as the No. 2-ranked 49ers improved to 5-0 on the season.
As a team, The
Beach hit for .519 while holding American (5-2) to an overall
percentage of .000.
"We made some
pretty good plays," said 49er Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro.
"When you hit .519 and hold the other team to .000 it's
a pretty strong match."
Beach middle blocker
Cheryl Weaver had 14 kills on 17 attempts for a .706 attack
percentage and Elisha Thomas finished with nine kills. Setter
Keri Nishimoto dished out 40 assists and posted two kills
on three attempts.
"Our transition
game was very good," Gimmillaro said. "We just played
at a level that American really couldn't handle."
Leading in the
offensive column for the international-heavy American squad
was Natacha Cornaz with seven kills and Karla Kucerkova with
six.
The 49ers served
up seven aces in the match, which lasted slightly more than
one hour.
With the first
road trip out of the way The Beach returned to Long Beach
Sunday night to prepare for a tough homestand, which will
include the team's first two Big West Conference matches of
the season.
"It's a very
big week for us," Gimmillaro said.
First up will be
a match against Big West rival Idaho on Thursday followed
by a Friday contest against Utah State. Topping off the week
will be a showdown with No. 4-ranked Penn State Saturday.
All three matches are set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at The Pyramid.
