opinion: our view

Absence policy harsh

Absent can mean that you are not present, inattentive, or failing to appear when expected. Being absent at times is a part of our lives. The attendance policy, which seems to be appearing more rigorously in a class near you, leaves little room for excuses.

You better hope you have one of these five reasons handy (with documentation) to get the illusive excused absence.

The acceptable reasons are: illness or injury to the student; death, injury or serious illness of an immediate family member; religious reasons; government obligation, such as jury duty; and university-sponsored activities, such as artistic performances, forensics presentations, participation in research conferences, intercollegiate athletic activities, student government and required class field trips.

Religious holidays, government obligations, and anticipated university-sponsored events require a one-week notice to be given to the professor.

We think that this policy is ludicrous. Students on this campus are old. Most are adults. Some are barely 18. Regardless of age, we are paying a lot of money to attend these classes.

If we decide to go to the beach or barhopping with friends, we may miss class. Why should we have to suffer just for being absent? Presently, professors are threatening us with lower grades if we have poor attendance.

Would the professor rather have a student, stoned out of his or her gourd, sitting in class, even though mentally, they are "absent?" Said student could just sit at home and watch "South Park" instead, and not disrupt the class.

These are the kinds of decisions that students are faced with daily. We think that students are capable of making the "right" decision regarding class attendance. Students did not come to this college to get reprimanded with yellow slips in the halls.

We should not be treated like children. Maybe if professors had to show students documentation for every single time they were absent, things would be different.
