our view
Money, politics
again in bed together
Money. They say money makes the world go'round. For the love
of money, money that's what I want. We dream about money,
wish we had it and even if we're better off than most, we
feel like we'll die without it.
In the United States the most important thing for its citizens
is money. We all think that money is the answer to all our
woes. With money we can buy the material things that we want,
thus we fool ourselves by thinking that money can buy us happiness.
The Beatles once sang "Money Can't Buy You Love,"
but apparently money can buy you many things in the United
States, like freedom, ambassadorships and double standards.
Although we don't mean to keep bringing it up, since the events
of Sept. 11, we went from a selfish and self-motivated country
to one we felt was self-sacrificing. The truth is this sacrifice
hasn't lasted very long and we're back to business as usual.
We are a capitalistic country, whose love of money and disregard
for others around us near or far, has caused many to literally
hate our guts.
But we still can't prove those people wrong. Recently, many
interesting oversights or deals have been struck with those
in the financial elite.
George Argyros, an Orange County businessman who helped raise
money for President Bush's election campaign and even gave
a rather large sum of his own money to the campaign.
Along with a few other very obvious deals that have been struck
since, Bush's so-called victory, Argyros and others have been
selected for various positions that they don't have the qualifications
for.
In Argyros' case specifically he was named the ambassador
of Spain, having no former political knowledge or even a grasp
of the Spanish language.
On top of that, Argyros is an evil man who has currently lost
a civil suit worth $1.5 million for price gauging the tenants
of many apartment buildings owned by him.
Still, despite numerous articles in the OC Weekly about Argyros
and his financial shenanigans and a civil suit that Orange
County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas attempted to call
off, Argyros was still appointed the ambassador of Spain.
Why? Because he's got the cash.
At some point it would be great if we realized the true evils
of capitalism. Here in the United States and abroad, we are
no longer run by governments but corporations. Our governments
are nothing more than figureheads for the World Trade Organization
and the International Monetary Fund, two of the groups who
really have the power.
Only when we realize that money is the root of all evil, will
our country actually shape up. When those with fat pockets
stop getting anything they want and big business steps out
of politics, then and only then will this country be ruled
by the people for the people.
