National pride
needed
I read with some dismay, the article in the On-line Forty-Niner
about the lack of Veteran's Day recognition by Cal State Long
Beach and it made me wonder if the staff talked to each other.
There were two ceremonies on Monday in the upper quad, at
the Veteran's Flagpole to honor and recognize all of our nation's
veterans: past, present and future. One was a raising of the
colors by our own ROTC Honor Guard at 8 a.m. and the other
ceremony, performed again by our own ROTC Honor Guard, retired
the colors at 5 p.m.
You have a reporter that covers the Academic Senate meetings,
where an announcement was made pertaining to these ceremonies
on Thursday of last week. Those of us who are veterans are
very appreciative of the fact that some campus members took
the time to attend.
However, we did not see anyone from the Forty-Niner at either
event. It appeared to me that the writer was more concerned
with having a day off than with recognizing veterans. One
thing stood out very clear, in my opinion, is the lack of
respect shown by the students and some others for our flag
and national anthem.
At both events I observed people standing with their arms
crossed and others that continued walking during the playing
of our national anthem. Maybe they just don't know any better
and if that's the case your paper could help educate them
as to proper protocol pertaining to such events.
Why don't you focus on that instead of criticizing us when
you don't have all the facts?!
