opinion: our view

Veterans merit recognition

Back in the day there was nothing like going to bed on a Sunday evening knowing that you did not have to get up for school the next morning.

For years we spent time looking forward to President's Day, Memorial Day and...yes Veteran's Day.

Veteran's Day is the day where we celebrate veterans who have served at some time in the armed services. There are some families who use the time to reflect on their loss of a loved one who may be a casualty of war or for some other reason is no longer with them.

One Monday in November, we take the time to recognize the sacrifices that the men and women that have served in armed services have made.

Apparently though, Cal State Long Beach and for that matter the California State University system, has deemed Veteran's Day unnecessary for some strange reason.

We're interested in knowing the reason why.

Sure we can understand Columbus Day last month, but Veteran's Day?

It's a bit strange that we don't have Veteran's Day off from school and that is meant with all the seriousness and wonder we can muster.

The decision was probably made a long time ago, but with everything going on in the world, it's kind of a slap in the face to all those who have served in peace time and during war.

We do not condone war, but we are thankful that somebody has made the sacrifices that many of us are too selfish or scared to make.

The bottom line is that holidays are holidays for a reason. They are not arbitrary days where somebody has decided to celebrate unicorns or their pet rock.

Holidays are nationally condoned days of remembrance. They are even often passed by Congress and voted on by us, such as two of our newer holidays, Martin Luther King Day and Cesar Chavez Day.

So why has the CSU system and CSULB decided not to celebrate Veteran's Day?

No, wait. Don't tell us, because we don't really even want to know.

The truth of it all is that we can't just choose what holidays we will and will not celebrate on campus. CSULB is filled with people who have had family members in the armed forces and we are located next to the Veterans Hospital.

Our school should give whoever has an excuse to celebrate Veteran's Day, the chance to have it off and out of respect, the rest of us should use the day to sit back and learn something outside of school about our world.
