CSULB joins two
groups in support of worker's rights
I am delighted to announce that Cal State Long Beach has joined
and will support the Fair Labor Association and the Workers
Rights Consortium.
These two national organizations have decided that by working
together they can better monitor and protect the rights of
workers in the United States and around the world.
The FLA is a national nonprofit organization committed to
ensure proper working conditions for factory workers who produce
apparel and footwear. Its objective is to improve working
conditions in factories in the United States and abroad.
To this end, the FLA Charter Agreement establishes an industry-wide
code of conduct that lays the foundation for an independent
monitoring system.
The FLA accredits independent monitors to inspect factories
of participating companies and licensees of its affiliated
universities. It also determines whether these companies are
in compliance with the Association's standards.
The FLA then issues public reports that will give customers
the information they need to make informed purchasing decisions.
To date, 160 colleges and universities have affiliated with
the FLA to ensure that their licenses are operating in accordance
with the principles promoted by the FLA.
In order to meet this goal, FLA-affiliated schools require
all their licensees to comply with FLA's Principles of Monitoring.
A newer organization, the WRC, was established to pursue some
of the same goals as the FLA. However, it focuses its efforts
on products made for colleges and universities.
The WRC is a nonprofit organization created by college and
university administrations, students, and labor rights experts.
The WRC's purpose is to assist in the enforcement of manufacturing
codes of conduct adopted by colleges and universities.
These codes are designed to ensure those factories producing
clothing and other goods bearing college and university names
respect the basic rights of workers. More than 80 colleges
and universities are affiliated with the WRC.
Everyone at CSULB has a strong interest in removing any sweatshop-produced
items from our Bookstore inventory. We believe membership
in these organizations will result in one of the most effective
ways that CSULB can ensure that the clothing bearing the university's
logos is made under decent working conditions.
The university is committed to act responsibly by licensing
our logos and trademarks only to manufacturers who offer decent
wages and humane treatment to workers.
CSULB is committed to the continuing efforts of students,
faculty and administrators to work together as advocates of
fair labor and to contribute to constructive changes in the
apparel industry, both in the United States and abroad.
