Holidays a time
for giving
November is upon us and it's time to start thinking once again
about the holiday season. This year will seemingly have special
meaning for all those families who may be seeing each other
for the first time since Sept. 11, - these families will take
a moment to count their collective blessings and actually
be thankful for a change to even see each other.
However, with all that is going on, it's important to not
forget about those people in our country who need help. This
holiday season seems ripe for all of us to maybe focus a bit
too much on our good fortunes and neglect some of the charitable
contributions we usually make.
Maybe we don't actually make charitable contributions, hey
that's fine just remember that all help doesn't have to be
monetary.
There are plenty of homeless shelters that will accept food
donations, or even better yet, volunteers to help serve food
or clean up. Also, there are cancer organizations that accept
donations of hair, so they can provide wigs for chemotherapy
patients.
If you are still not sure what you could do or who you want
to help, just look inside yourself and find what makes you
angry, sad or depressed and make a decision to do something
about it.
Remember that there are millions of organizations that help
millions of different people. There are places like The Ronald
McDonald House, which provides families places to stay while
their children receive treatments for leukemia or cancer.
There are also battered women's shelters, which provide women
who have been abused a new start for them and their children.
The point is that there are just so many ways to help and
this year with all the giving in the wake of the disaster
we realized how good we can feel to sacrifice so we should
continue giving.
During these holidays though, what may be the most important
is the group with the highest level of poverty in the United
States; the children.
Many of these children die year in and year out because of
health concerns, which they can't afford to get help with.
Sometimes these children just die of starvation.
While we are at it, we as a country should get off our selfish
butts and do something to help the poor and needy children
in this country everyday.
We're not talking about Sally Struthers, "Save the Children,"
we're talking about children that look and act just like ours
at home. Maybe some of our children or brothers and sisters
go to school with poor underprivileged children, so we can
start locally.
We don't need to make a big difference in some large significant
way; we just need to give in our own communities to the people
who need it the most.
The holiday season is the perfect time to atone for lazy,
apathetic behavior throughout the year. So we urge you to
keep this in mind as the holiday's approach.
