opinion: our view

Health care needs work

Webster's Dictionary defines socialism as "A theory of the ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution from society, with all members sharing in the work and the products." This definition has very little negativity, if any, attached to it. However, the term socialism has always been a dirty word in our greedy capitalist world.

Hence, socialized medicine has never taken off as a concept in America, because it includes a form of the word socialism. Therefore, the term Universal Health Care has been adopted, but the concept has still not attained any serious consideration.

In fact, Bill Bradley used it as one of his platforms when he sought election as the Democratic presidential candidate. But even the supposed liberal Democratic Party looked at Bradley as insane, instead voting for Al Gore and the rest, as they say, is history.

But today is a good time to reconsider Universal Health Care. What this program would do is provide health care to all American citizens regardless of race, creed or social status.

Most importantly, it would call for full support by the government in abolishing those awful HMOs, where you can't get any type of help and if you do it's poor, uninspired and cost-effective.

Universal Health Care would perhaps help all of us in the United States achieve a more positive lifestyle with better eating habits and above all proactive medical attention rather than reactive.

Also, it would allow those that are poor, very old or very young receive the type of medical attention that they require. By doing this we could end adolescent deaths due to malnutrition or lack of decent medical attention.

In short this system could work for all of us, by making us more comfortable to go to a doctor and know that we won't get the run around. Universal Health Care would ensure for all of us that we would receive attention regardless of how much money it will cost the doctor.

A system like this is already in place in countries like Canada and has greatly improved their way of life. The cost to us is only a small additional tax on our paychecks. Sure we're ready to fund wars, but we can't fund our own health?

This is the biggest problem as to why Universal Health Care has been defeated to this point. The big medial conglomerates that do not have our best interests in minds have gone on a campaign to make it seem like it would be so much more costly to tax us for our health.

There are some places where capitalism does not belong and socialism does, health care is one of them. We should have the right to good medical attention without money entering the picture at any  time.

More to the point, our health should be one of those fundamentals rights guaranteed us by our government and should not be in the hands of greedy multi-million dollar conglomerates.
