49er teams excelling

Congratulations to the nation's No.1-ranked women's volleyball team -- our own 49ers -- as they remain undefeated with an impressive 18-0 record. I hope each of you will have the opportunity to catch at least one home game when these wonderful female athletes go up against other top-ranked teams in the nation.

Also, our congratulations go out to our 49er debate team who emerged as champions of the California Double-up Swing Tournament this past weekend.

I know I have written recently to you about Beach forensics, but I wanted to let all of you know about their latest success. I'm always excited for students and their teams when they compete against universities throughout Southern California, including USC and UCLA, as well as throughout the nation and win top academic scholarships or first-place honors.

I hope you will join me in lending your support to these two high-achieving teams as they complete this season's competitive tournaments.

I'm also very excited that dozens of 49ers volunteered on Saturday as part of the national "Make A Difference Day" to help neighborhoods around the Washington Middle School area of our city. Cal State Long Beach students, along with students from local area high schools and community groups, stenciled street numbers at homes which lack visible addresses that are necessary for emergency personnel. The students also had the opportunity to plant pear trees and plants to create a butterfly zone in the parkway areas on Cedar and Pacific Avenues in Long Beach.

We were very lucky to have Australia's children's literacy expert Mem Fox on campus Monday. Fox discussed her latest book "Reading Aloud," which explains how children's ability to learn can be improved significantly when parents read aloud to their preschool children.

Go BEACH!
