In tragic times, why are people so rude?

Recently I have noticed that people have become more and more rude and selfish, and I would like to know why. It just doesn't make any sense to me, especially after the Sept. 11 tragedies, in which I though that people would be nice to each other, at least for a couple of months.

For example, I called my credit card company because they had made a mistake on my bill. I wasn't upset because I understand that human beings will make mistakes, and that's OK as long as you fix it. This was not the case. The woman on the phone was extremely rude, telling me she didn't have time to be bothered with this matter. You don't have time? I thought this was your job. Maybe I was wrong. In the end, she didn't fix the mistake. I had to call someone else two days later to do it.

What happened to customer service? What happened to "The customer is always right?" Please, the customer couldn't be more wrong. I went to Las Vegas a few weeks ago, and my friends and I decided to catch the bus to go back to our hotel rooms. What a bad decision we made. The bus was very crowded when we got on, and the bus driver was screaming at us to move behind the yellow line. We moved behind the line, and he was still cussing us out. One of my friends decided to cuss back at him. This was ridiculous. I paid my hard-earned money to ride that bus, and I get cussed out for following the driver's directions, what is that?

People never cease to amaze me with how rude they can be. While driving on the 605 freeway this man put his blinker on,didn't stop to look before merging, and he almost side swiped my car. Then, he gets upset with me because I guess I was supposed to be psychic and I was supposed to know he was coming, and he flicks his middle finger at me.

Now I'm not saying that I'm perfect and I've never been rude to people, but I have never been intentionally rude to someone. I may feel sick one day, hold my head down and not want to talk, but I am not just going to do run people off the road and talk to people like they are stupid.

I've also noticed that people don't like to speak anymore. I try to speak to people I see walking by, but it's hard when people are looking mean, and it's even more difficult when you speak to someone and they don't speak back.

I want to encourage everyone to try to be a little more pleasant with others.  You never know how you can change a person's day for the better when you give them a smile, a hug or a nice "hello."
