Arts aplenty at
CSULB
Cal State Long Beach
has always been a school for serious students of the arts. Many
of our programs enjoy lofty national rankings.
Last weekend I
attended one of the best dance concerts I've ever seen.
It was performed in our beautiful Martha Knoebel Dance Theatre
by students, and choreographed by our graduate dance students
as part of their thesis requirements.
Since Sept. 21,
the sensational play "Lamarck" has been receiving
soaring reviews as it plays at our downtown theatre, the Edison
on Broadway Avenue. Our students are fortunate to have two
college theatres: the Edison downtown and the University Studio
on campus in which to develop their craft.
I would recommend
that you catch one of the many exciting theatre productions
presented by your faculty and fellow students. A very
popular play returning for its record-breaking ninth year
is "An O. Henry Christmas" which starts on Nov.
30 and is presented at the Edison Theatre through Dec. 18.
Beginning Oct.
30, our University Art Museum will have two special exhibitions
for your enjoyment. One is by the artist Gay Outlaw, who will
present both floor sculptures and wall-mounted works.
The second will
be an exhibition devoted to a unique collection of signature
paintings by Lee Krasner. For more information about
these museum events, you can send an e-mail to uam@csulb.edu.
During the month
of November, our design department will have three major exhibits
in interior design, phototography, and industrial design.
For dates and times of these events, please call the department
at 985-5313.
Over the next eight
weeks, the wonderful faculty and students in our music department
will perform almost two dozen concerts in the Daniel Recital
Hall and the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.
At those venues,
you will be able to enjoy the musical talents of our student
composers, the University Symphony Orchestra, Brass Quintet,
Woodwind Chamber, Symphonic Band, String Quartet, University
Choir, Chamber Singers, Vocal and Studio Jazz singers, Women's
Chorus, Percussions Ensemble, and our Opera Studies singers.
Tickets for most of these performances cost less than $6.
Regardless of your
music preferences, I'm certain you will find any number of
these musical events a delightful treat.
You may want to
mark your calendars for Nov. 8, when the department of film
and electronic arts presents its 11th Annual Student Filmmakers
Showcase at the Directors Guild Theatre on Sunset Boulevard
in Hollywood at 7:30 p.m.
This is a fun and
exciting evening for hundreds of CSULB film majors and for
the department alumni. Our supportive and influential
alumni are thoughtful mentors to the student filmmakers who
will be previewing their creative works on the big screen
for the first time.
These are just
a few of the hundreds of events and performances held each
semester. I realize that most of you have very busy
schedules juggling school, work and home responsibilities.
However, I do hope
you find some leisure time to attend and take advantage of
as many of these arts events as your calendar permits.
Go BEACH!
