opinion: our view

Sept. 11 already glorified

A television show renowned for its controversial host and topics of conversation, "Politically Incorrect," has been pulled from several affiliates, due to Maher's 'un-American' statements about the United States Army.

Meanwhile, many television shows, movies and people in the public eye around the nation, and in the entertainment business are walking on egg shells. No one wants to utter an un-American word, or do anything else that might criticize our oh-so-sensitive government officials or armed services.

Movies filmed prior to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 are altering their opening scenes if they pan the New York skyline. Supposedly, movie executives are being sensitive by not creating reminders of the horrific acts that occurred.

Well, guess what? It happened. Everything reminds people of the tragedies. It is all over the news, screaming from the front pages of newspapers, online, on T-shirts, in meaningless forwarded e-mail messages. People go to the movies and switch on sitcoms to be entertained. Sure, they may do this to escape from reality.

But we are drowning in a sea of reality. How long are the television producers and movie moguls supposed to bite their tongues? Seeing the Twin Towers in the opening sequence of "Saturday Night Live" is a tradition. It is a salute to what once stood so tall, not something we should erase from our memories indefinitely.

Hollywood is kidding itself. Seeing the old New York City on a big screen or a small screen, complete with its glorious towers, will hit America in the face with reality. The people who were lost in the tragedy of Sept. 11 may be gone.

Many are still missing. This is as real as it gets. Funny how Hollywood, the masters of disguise and illusion, continue to go about their business, hiding the truth from America.

It makes us wonder, what else are they altering that we may not know about?
