opinion:

Maxson pleased, but wants more

Earlier this month, U.S. News and World Report released its annual survey of universities. We are very excited about the ratings that Cal State Long Beach received in the recent survey, which rates more than 300 comparable universities in a number of categories.

In the very important category of academic reputation, we are enormously delighted to receive the very high ranking of third in the second tier, which is better than 15 of 33 universities in the first tier. We're very pleased with this rating; however, we won't be satisfied until we're in the top tier.

All but four universities rated in the top tier were private universities. Because CSULB is a large urban university, we had lower graduation rates than some other institutions, which kept our ranking out of the first tier.

In another important area, this prestigious study rated CSULB fourth in the second tier for freshman retention, which is better than 17 of 33 in the first tier.

In just a few short years, we have moved in all categories from the third and fourth tiers to the second tier. And we will continue to work very hard to earn high marks in all areas which are student priorities.

We also just learned about some very good news regarding your University's forensics team.  This past weekend the Beach Forensics team took third place in the University Sweepstakes at CSU Fresno, in which more than 30 universities competed in the season opener.

At this annual competition, several 49ers came in first place in individual competitions such as parliamentary debate speaker and oral interpretation.     I know you join me in congratulating the two dozen CSULB students who took home honors from Fresno. They will all ensure a bright future for our liberal arts programs. The team plans to continue its quests for more debating victories at two other colleges this weekend, Claremont College and El Camino College.

Go BEACH!
