Some fraternities
are good
First and foremost,
I would like to apologize for the way in which you were treated
when you made your visit to this particular fraternity house.
There is absolutely no excuse, nor any amount of tolerance for
racial slurs or for discriminatory behavior. I am extremely
sorry that you had to suffer through such an endeavor.
I would like to
assure you that from my personal experience this does seem
to be an isolated incident involving the Greek system on our
campus. I am sure that there have been other incidents similar
to yours of which I am not aware, but overall I think we tend
to be a very accepting and welcoming group.
You have every
right to be angry at the way in which you were treated. However,
I must make you aware that this is not the norm or the standard
for fraternities on this campus.
Were you to come
back and check out some of the chapters during rush week,
albeit not the one in which you had your experience, I am
confident that not only would you find this out, but you might
also find a brotherhood that will last a lifetime.
I admire your desire
to teach, and to erase "people's ignorance about those
around them." First of all, however, we must erase the
ignorance within ourselves and forget stereotypes about everyone,
even Greeks, so that we can see them for what they truly are.
Being in a fraternity
is an unforgettable opportunity that I would encourage every
man on this campus to experience. Everyone is welcome to come
out this week and all of the weeks to come to see if fraternity
life is for them, rather than basing their judgments on media
coverage, and on a bad, yet isolated, experience at a party.
