Fishy keys to health

Students at Cal State Long Beach may do well on their final examinations after eating a good amount of fish.

In Japan, where many people eat fish in their everyday meals, researchers at Osakana Health Food Conference in Osaka and other dietetics centers have been studying the fatty acids that only marine products contain and the benefits that the fatty acids can bring humans.

The fatty acid to pay attention to is docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It has been proved that DHA does help people to be quick on the uptake and improves the abilities to memorize.

The research shows this is because DHA has effects of helping the growth of the brain cells, softening the cells and quickening the speed of information communication.

Popular fish that contain DHA are mackerel, sardines, saury and tuna. Human bodies will absorb DHA well when they eat these fish raw, according to the research.

"My friend and I were thinking about going to eat sushi after the final, but I think we should better go before the final comes," said Lynn Saito, a CSULB junior majoring in computer science.

Fish also contain other materials that can bring us great benefits.

For instance, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), another fatty acid found in fish, will expand blood vessels and lowers blood pressure, and can prevent humans from getting cerebral or cardiac infarctions. EPA reduces the amount of fatty tissues in the blood and also prevents people from getting thrombuses, which are fibrous clots that form in and obstruct the blood vessels or form in one of the chambers of thought.

Also, the iron fish contains is hem iron, and it is very effective for people who are anemic because human bodies can easily absorb the hem iron with greater ease than other irons.

Moreover, a good quality of protein found in fish reduces the amount of cholesterol in blood and reduces the extra amount of salt in the body, then prevents humans from getting high blood pressure and apoplexies or strokes.

Finally, people who are irritated or under the stress are recommended by the researchers to eat fish because it contains rich amounts of calcium and vitamins, which helps human bodies to absorb calcium.

The 17 years of study at the National Cancer Center in Japan shows people who eat fish everyday live five years longer than the people who rarely eat fish.

It's a good time for students to consider their dietary habits and get over the hard situations of final exams under the best conditions possible.
