CSULB welcomes students

By Jeanne Hoffa
On-line Forty-Niner

OK, everybody comes to college and focuses on their academic career, but what about all of those extracurricular activities that beef up the hobbies, interests, community service sections on resumes, and to make life interesting?

For those who are shy about introducing themselves, joining a group or simply orienting themselves to a new place, take heart - this week the campus is coming to you.

Nearly 80 organizations and clubs will set up tables during the Week of Welcome celebration manned by knowledgeable representatives piled with information, applications and sign-up sheets on the Friendship Walk between the Social Sciences/Public Affairs Building and Brotman Hall.

New members

Just a sampling of althetic interests represented will be the surf team, the Aikido team, the sailing team and archery club - there will even be a group of alpine skiers and snowboarders. There will be members present from hockey, badminton, rowing, archery, water skiing, Tai Kwon Do, soccer and rugby. Cal State Long Beach also has a triathlon team students can join.

Several religious clubs will also be represented during Week of Welcome. Various faiths such as Catholic, Protestant and Hindu will be recruiting members for their clubs.

Honor societies such as the Golden Key Club will be there. The Alumni Association, who has developed mentoring programs and will hold dinners in alumni homes this year, will be recruiting.

Also look for specialty groups such as the Society of Women Engineers, the Associated Business Students Organization, the Pilipino American Coalition, Hispanic Business Organization, ROTC and the Black Student Union.

Many sororities and fraternities will also be fervently vying for new members.

Activities

Students can get revved up with music, munch food, toss bowling balls, jump in the pool and even learn to dance.

Power 106 disc jockeys will play music today in the University Student Union Southwest Terrace. Local band Chapter 11 will croon there Wednesday at noon. DJs from KIIS radio station take over for Thursday. Two bands and DJs will play at The Gold Mine and the USU Friday.

No reason to go hungry this week. Barbecues held today through Thursday in the University Student Union offer $2 combo meals including a hamburger or tofuburger, chips and a soda. Food can be purchased 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

All-night party

Week of Welcome culminates with an all-night party Friday, "Smorgasport," held at various locations on campus, complete with more music, food and activities.

The first 500 partiers will receive free T-shirts. There will be no charge to play pool, have a game of ping pong, or to bowl in the USU. Martial arts experts will hold demonstrations. The USU pool will be open for free swims, deep water aerobics exercises and a big inner-tube water polo game.

There will even be ballroom and hip-hop dance lessons given. Students can also play racquetball and tennis for free on the campus courts. Indoor co-ed soccer and volleyball games will be held in the East Gym.

Listen to bands "Champion the Average" and "Strategies for Hangman" in the physical education courtyard and munch at a barbeque until 8:30 p.m.
This will be the first event where students get points using their CSULB ID cards for the Beach Patrol. Free raffle tickets will be handed out to everyone who signs up in the Student Union. The party will continue until 1 a.m.
