Associated Students
Inc awarded a total of $9,000 to 18 Cal State Long Beach students
in the largest comprehensive scholarship program ever.
Each recipient
was handed a check for $500 in recognition of his or her leadership
skills and campus-wide participation at a reception in the
A.S.I. business office Wednesday. Wayne Stickney-Smith, A.S.I.
president, announced the winners and shook their hands, congratulating
recipients on their achievements.
"This award
is extra special to me because it is my own school that is
rewarding me," said recipient Melanie Wuerstle. "It
is so nice to be recognized for all of the hard work we put
into the clubs and organizations on campus."
A total of 240
students applied for the scholarship program that was sponsored
by several different departments and organizations on campus.
The winners were chosen for their active participation in
a wide variety of on and off-campus leadership activities.
Some recipients volunteered at the Los Angeles County Hospital,
worked on the school yearbook, were SOAR leaders, participated
in the Learning Alliance and were leaders on a school athletic
team.
"It's wonderful
to see A.S.I. rewarding students who are involved in the school,"
said recipient Oron Maher, who happens to work as the associate
chair of the New Student Orientation Committee on A.S.I. "Hopefully
this will serve as an incentive for other students to participate
too."
Stickney-Smith,
during his closing comments at the reception said: "You
are the first to receive this scholarship, so you are starting
a tradition. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.
You are the finest CSULB has to offer."
