By Sarah Langford
On-line Forty-Niner

Each year, the Cal State Long Beach Academic Senate recognizes the achievements and qualities of superior faculty members by honoring them with a leadership award.

This year, the deadline for nominating a faculty member for the Nicholas Perkins Hardeman Academic Leadership Award is Monday. Nominations may be dropped off in the Academic Senate office, in ELIB-112, in the form of a letter naming the nominee and signed by the nominator.

Faculty, staff, students, alumni and administrators may make a nomination. All faculty, tenured or emeriti, or those on the Faculty Early Retirement Program, members are eligible to be nominated.

This award is designed to acknowledge publicly and reward significant contributions to the principle and practice of shared governance at CSULB.

Each nominee must submit documentation such as a resume and other evidence of his or her leadership at the university by Friday, Feb. 15. The award decision will be made by the Faculty Personnel Policies Council in late spring.

The faculty member:

•Must have demonstrated exceptional leadership through distinguished service in one or more influential university bodies, such as councils, committees, sub-committees, or the California Faculty Association,

•Must have served for at least 10 years on exemplary service position and participation at the department, college and university level,

•Must have made contributions must have made a significant difference in the institutional ethos of CSULB of preserving and advancing the integrity of academic freedom and responsibility

The award is affectionately referred to as "The Perk," in remembrance of its' second recipient, Nicholas Perkins Hardeman, who won the award in the 1989-1990 semester. The first winner was Ben Cunningham, former chair of the journalism department. The award was named after Hardeman due to his popularity.
