A new group will
join Cal State Long Beach Thursday. Four graduate students
in the department of social work brought a unit of the National
Association of Social Workers to the CSULB campus.
Esther Vega, Loretta Gonzalez, Maria Sevilla and Roxanne Weiner,
graduate students in social work, will serve on the board
of directors. Three professors from the social work department
will work as officers. Cheryl Lee, professor in the social
work department, will serve as president, Rebecca Lopez, associate
professor in the social work department, as vice president
and social work professor Mike Foster as treasurer.
"[The] dream is the unit be a force in our community
for a long time to come," Lee said.
The NASW is the largest organization for social workers in
the world. The goal of the group is to maintain professional
standards in the field of social work and advance social policy.
Lee said the Long Beach unit will organize to support social
work causes and activities in the community.
The CSULB unit was formed to directly response to the needs
of the community after Sept. 11. The first meeting is Thursday
in the Pointe Room of The Pyramid. The meeting will open with
John Oliver, director of the social work department, who will
deliver the keynote speech.
Preceding the meeting will be a discussion, "Searching
for Meaning in Difficult Times," organized by Susan Rice,
professor of social work, and Rene Castro, lecturer in the
department of social work, and the project director of the
national conference for community and justice. Lee said she
encourages community members, faculty and students to join
in the discussion, which will begin at 8:30 a.m.
