Alternative foods sustain CSULB students

By Ayako Ando
On-line Forty-Niner

Students at Cal State Long Beach don't have to give up good health while on campus. They just have to extend their range of vision and find what is available to them.

CSULB has a number of fast food restaurants such as Carl's Jr., Subway, El Pollo Loco and Round Table Pizza located in the University Student Union. Most students seem to end up eating from those restaurants.

However, more than 10 other places for students have food on campus, not only fast food but healthy, high quality food as well.

Clint Campbell, who manages the University Dining Plaza as director of retail food services, said he tries to serve high quality food for students.

"I think many students eat fast food on campus because they hardly have time to sit down and wait for meals between classes," Campbell said. "We try to make the best selection possible, so we also have some food available for vegetarians at the Nugget, the Outpost and other places. We make sure of the quality of food and [maintain] reasonable prices for students."

Students can also satisfy their hunger at the dining halls. These two halls are located near the dormitories, in west campus and are open for students living on campus and others.

"We work with the family consumer science department and a few doctors from the Student Health Center to take care of the students' health and the nutrition balance," said Patti Gray, director of resident dining service.

Gray said she and her manager try to put new items on the menu and taste new items a couple of times a week.

She also said there are places for students to share their opinions about the food and she considers some requests from students.

"Some people are allergic to certain foods such as wheat, so we take care of those people on an individual bases," Gray said.

At the dining halls, they prepare food for vegetarians every day and willingly use brand names instead of cheap foods. Rather than using frozen foods, they make almost everything in the kitchens.

"It is good for students to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, get plenty of proteins, and you can get it all here. We provide a lot of choices," Gray said.

Mimi Santos, a freshman majoring in English, appreciates food on campus.

"I didn't know that we can also eat at the dining hall, but if they are serving healthy good food there, I will definitely go," she said. "It's still on campus."

Gray said she gets a lot of information about food from the family consumer science department. She said she encourages students to approach her with nutrition questions.

"We give students the options to eat healthy, then it's up to the students to choose what to eat," Gray said.
