Coalition seeks
less support for war
By Jamie Rogers

Cal State Long
Beach students have shown their support for human rights recently
through various events organized by students and supported
by academic departments.
Since Sept. 11,
numerous town hall meetings, teach-ins and speeches have taken
place throughout the campus supported at one time or another
by nearly every department.
Continuing the
trend, the Anti-War Student Coalition will host speakers Michel
Shehadeh, Mike Italie and Al Duncan Thursday. In an effort
to curb support of the war in Afghanistan, the speakers will
address the U.S.-led bombing in Afghanistan, the "Patriotic
Act," military tribunals and recent events the organizers
term "attacks on immigrants, civil and labor rights."
Michel Shehadeh
is the West Coast regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee, a nonprofit organization designed to defend the
rights of Arab people, promote Arab culture and dispel negative
stereotypes of Arab Americans.
Mike Italie, a
Miami mayoral candidate with the Socialist Workers Party,
was recently fired from Goodwill Industries after appearing
in a debate where he expressed opposition to the war in Afghanistan,
support for the Cuban Revolution and Union rights.
Since losing his
job as a sewing machine operator, Italie is traveling the
country to voice his concern for civil liberties with help
from the Committee to Defend Freedom of Speech and the Bill
of Rights.
Al Duncan is also
a member of the Socialist Workers Party and is a Vietnam veteran.
The speakers will
gather at 1 p.m. in the University Student Union Multipurpose
Room A. For more information, e-mail antiwarcsulb@hotmail.com.
