Skiing popular over Thanksgiving break

By Pamela Amaral
Special to the On-line Forty-Niner

With Thanksgiving upon us and winter break right around the corner, students are eager to flee Long Beach and have a little fun elsewhere, including the ski slopes.

LA Ski and Sun Tours and Summer Winter Action Tours are two companies that actively plan trips for college students.

These trips consist of more than just some ski slope lift tickets and discount rates on hotel rooms. Concerts, casinos, contests, theme parties, disc jockeys, bars, clubs and more than 3,000 college students from around the West make these trips so popular.

For $259, LASST offers three nights' stay in a downtown Reno casino, which is one of the best aspects of the trip, said LASST representative, Kellen Flores.

"The night life in Reno is amazing. There's so much to do and there's never a dull moment," said Flores.

The LASST trip includes two days of lift tickets at Squaw Valley and admission to a Digital Underground and Kottonmouth Kings in concert. The purchase also includes parties each night and a college music festival featuring DJs such as Brandon Wallace and Oliver Twist.

For $249, SWAT offers three nights' stay at the Lake Tahoe Inn. A $50 upgrade includes a room at the Horizon Casino in South Lake Tahoe. The trip includes a two-day lift ticket at Heavenly Mountain, a Pennywise concert and admission into the wild theme parties that SWAT hosts each night.

"The best part about these trips is that there are over 3,500 college kids from California, Nevada, and Arizona and we are all here for one reason, and that's to party," said SWAT representative Billy Grenham.
