Teacher plans to give back to Long Beach

By Dwight Flenniken III
On-line Forty-Niner

Many people who grow up around Long Beach feel a direct connection to the city and its people. Beyond that, some feel the need to give back to a place that gave them so much.

Teri Lockerman is one of those people.

"I know this is a city where I will always reside," Lockerman said. "I feel loyal to the city of Long Beach."

She gives back as a teacher, by passing knowledge to children.

Her schooling came by way of the Long Beach Unified School District and her path after high school led her into a far different direction than she is headed today.

She spent four years at the Fashion Design of Institute and Merchandising. After graduating she moved on to a career in fashion buying and marketing. For eight years she toiled in the fashion industry, but the entire time longed for something more.

Lockerman enrolled concurrently at Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach, heading for a career in education. After she became a full-time student at CSULB she narrowed her focus, and decided to teach at the middle school level.

As part of the education process at CSULB a candidate must choose a focus area. She decided on science as a specialization.

Lockerman finished her bachelor's degree in 1997, and chose an assignment with the LBUSD. Since 1997 she has taught at Eugene Tincher Prep School, located only a few miles from CSULB.

"She is an outstanding teacher. She has very good rapport with all the students and is very creative," Tincher Vice Principal Mark Curran said. Her first assignment at Tincher was as a fourth-grade teacher. Since then she moved to the sixth-grade level for two years, and is currently an eighth-grade science teacher.

As she began her third year of teaching she became restless, and wanted to return to school for further education. In the summer of 2000 she took her first graduate classes in education at CSULB.

"Being in the graduate program has been a wonderful experience, because I'm surrounded by other teachers that come into class with great ideas and offer sincere support," Lockerman said.

She will finish her program within the year, and plans to obtain a second masters degree or a doctorate.

In the meantime she will continue her teaching at Tincher Prep. She plans to remain in Long Beach and give back to a city that has given her so much.
