The 22nd annual
Black Consciousness Conference on Nov. 16 and 17 will provide
two days of reflection and assessment about the needs of the
community. Taking place throughout the University Student
Union, this year's theme is "Progressive Change Through
Consciousness: Thoughts to Action."
Friday's schedule
consists of events involving thought and discussion.
A panel focusing on relationships will be part of the event
followed by a talent expression night with students dancing,
singing, reading poetry and an open mic session.
The second day
of the conference will consist of workshops and a banquet
Saturday night with keynote speaker Naim Akbar, psychologist
and faculty member from Florida State University.
Brett Waterfield,
assistant director of Student Life and Development, has been
helping with the logistics for the conference.
"The conference
gets at issues relevant in the community," Waterfield
said. "It is good for students to get connected
and get involved in the community. That is where the theme
"Thoughts to Action Come Into Play."
A mini-conference
will be held for children that will include crafts and storytelling.
The event is open
to everyone. Attendants normally consist of a mixture
of students and community members with CSULB alumni attending
the banquet Saturday.
The Black Student
Union and the NAACP Student Chapter are sponsoring the event.
