Trimming funds in response to terrorists

By Sarah Langford
On-line Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach is facing some major budget revisions for the rest of this year and the next due to the events of Sept. 11 and the economic recession that immediately followed, announced CSULB President Robert Maxson announced at Thursday's Academic Senate meeting.

The Chancellor's Office implemented a budget cut of 1 percent for the rest of the fiscal year, last Wednesday, and a 5 percent cut from next year's budget. The funds cut from the university this year total $1.7 million, while the 5 percent from next year will come to about $8.5 million.

"This is a precautionary measure to prepare us for what happens fiscally as a result of the terrorist attacks on our country," Maxson said. "We have a little over half of what we need to cover our budget cut for this year, but the more money we can carry over into next year's budget, the softer the blow will be then."

A partial hiring freeze is also effective immediately. Maxson said that tenured and tenure-track faculty will not be affected, but all other hiring will come to a halt. Exceptions will be made only when requests to hire new faculty are submitted to the appropriate vice president for approval. Even still, new faculty is not guaranteed.

The Senate also voted to approve an amendment to the complete medical withdrawal policy. The old policy implied that students who are unable to complete the semester due to medical reasons must present the appropriate evidence to the university in person.

The wording in the revised policy clarifies that the documents may be submitted by someone other than the injured or ill student, for students who are bed-ridden or unable to come to campus in person.

At the next meeting the Senate will hear a second reading on the implementation of an option in fitness under the B.S. in kinesiology, as well as the discontinuance of the option in fitness under the B.A. in kinesiology.

The next meeting will take place Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Towner Auditorium, PSY-203.
