Less hassle to
leave

Cal State Long
Beach students who become seriously ill or injured during
a semester can request a medical withdrawal with greater ease
after a new policy passed Thursday in the Academic Senate.
Medical withdrawal allows for an ill or injured student to
receive a "W," or withdrawal, in all coursework
for that semester. A "W" offers a student
the chance to drop classes without academic penalty.
Among other changes, the revised policy allows for someone
to submit paperwork on behalf of the ill student, rather than
the ill or injured student having to submit it personally,
as the old policy stated.
The new policy also changes the process students must take
to file for a withdrawal. Before, a student was required to
visit individual professors. Now, Enrollment Services takes
care of most of the work.
To be considered for medical withdrawal, according to the
revised policy, the student must present evidence that a severe
medical or debilitating psychological condition prevents the
student from attending and/or doing the required work of the
courses to the extent that it is impossible to complete the
courses.
A completed medical withdrawal form may be obtained from Enrollment
Services in BH-123 or on the Internet at www.csulb.edu.
Students with more questions about the revised policy may
call Enrollment Services at (562) 985-5471.
