Chair warns about
war

Dealing with the
aftermath of terrorism without bloodshed will be on the slate
in a presentation by Maulana Karenga Tuesday evening at the
2000+ Bookstore in Long Beach.
Karenga, professor and chairman of the black studies department
at Cal State Long Beach, will deliver a lecture titled "Sharing
the Burden and Possibilities of the Crisis," as part
of an ongoing series of lecturers at the bookstore located
at 309 Pine Ave.
One of the main thrusts of Karenga's message is that "we
must know that it is morally and rationally contradictory
to kill innocent people in a general war without specific
targets while condemning others who do it."
He also stresses the need for a re-evaluation of the United
States' response -- both at home and abroad -- to the events
of Sept. 11 in an excerpt from the lecture.
"We must resist the erosion of civil and human rights
under the camouflage of national security and in the midst
of the cacophony of calls for vengeance and victory in a war
whose horrors will eventually come back to haunt us,"
he said.
Besides his roles at CSULB, Karenga is the director of the
Kawaida Institute of Pan-African Studies, Los Angeles and
national chairman of The Organization Us, a cultural and social
change organization. He is also the author of numerous scholarly
articles and 14 books.
The presentation is set to begin at 7 p.m. For more information,
one may call (562) 435-1199.
